"Is driving a powerboat or motor cruiser the same as driving a car?"

It's a common misconception until a novice skipper tries it and finds it's more like driving a car on black ice on a busy main road! Worse than that, without even doing anything, the wind or tide may inexplicably propel you towards another boat or perhaps a marina pontoon. You turn the steering wheel and nothing happens and then the inevitable happens! Ouch - bang - £!!!!

Well, fortunately, most skippers quickly learn that it's not the same as driving a car. Sadly, perhaps due to lack of training or experience, some motor cruiser owners don't get maximum enjoyment or use from their boat and prefer to "stay safely in harbour" when they might easily and safely have taken it out or only undertake very local passages due to a lack of confidence or knowledge.

Handling a powerboat or motor cruiser competently and safely is not a "black art". We offer motor and power boat lessons that teach these skills in a friendly and constructive way around the south and west of Cornwall. The result is that the skipper starts to feel more confident - and may be less shouting at the crew - and generally have a fuller and more enjoyable use from their boat.

We are based near Mylor Marina, Falmouth, and are able to offer own boat tuition both in the Falmouth area and elsewhere in Cornwall and west Devon by arrangement on board your own boat.
